Six months after the burial, the dead merchant's brother stood at the edge of the cemetery and pointed at the freshly opened grave. "He died of stomach illness," the widow had told the magistrate. "The doctor confirmed it." But the brother had not forgotten the argument over the family warehouse — and the fortune that changed hands the week his brother died. The coroner climbed down into the pit, brushed the last soil from the ribs, and went pale. The bones were not the color of normal dead. They were black.


The Technique, in Song Ci's Own Words

Volume IV of The Washing Away of Wrongs — the first systematic forensic manual in any civilization — devotes its chapter on poisoning (服毒) to a problem that no coroner wanted to face: what do you do when the body has already rotted and the only evidence left is the skeleton?

Song Ci's answer is deceptively simple. "If a person is poisoned while alive," he writes, "the entire body turns dark blue-black. After many days, even when the flesh remains, it too turns black. Then he adds the critical control — the forensic baseline that separates poison from nature: "If someone places poison in a dead person's mouth to fake poisoning, the flesh and bone will only turn yellowish-white (皮肉与骨只作黄白色)."[2]"死后将毒药在口内假作中毒,皮肉与骨只作黄白色。" Translation: If poison is placed in the mouth of a dead person to fake poisoning, the flesh and bone will only appear yellowish-white.

Read that again. Song Ci understood, seven centuries before forensic toxicology existed, that a living body absorbs poison into its own tissues — and that the skeleton keeps a record of that absorption long after the flesh has gone. A body that was poisoned after death, by contrast, has no circulatory system to carry the toxin into the bones. The poison sits on the surface. The bones stay their natural color.

This is not just observation. This is the logic of a controlled experiment — living versus dead exposure — encoded into a forensic manual.


A Case from Song Ci's Files

Let me reconstruct the kind of case this technique was designed for.

A wealthy rice merchant in southern Fujian dies in the autumn of 1238. He has been ill for three days — vomiting, stomach pain, discolored skin. The family physician writes it up as a stomach disorder (胃疾), consistent with the symptoms described in Song Ci's manual for poisoning by arsenic (砒霜) or wild ginger (野葛): "blisters across the whole body, dark blue-black in color, eyes bulging, small thorn-like growths on the tongue, lips cracked and split, abdomen swollen."[3]Song Ci's description of arsenic poisoning symptoms: "砒霜野葛毒,得一伏时,遍身发小疱,作青黑色,眼睛耸出,舌上生小刺疱绽出,口唇破裂,两耳胀大,腹肚膨胀,粪门胀绽,十指甲青黑。" Modern toxicology confirms these symptoms are consistent with acute arsenic trioxide (As₂O₃) ingestion.

The burial proceeds quickly — autumn heat, no suspicion, the magistrate ready to sign off.

Six months later, the dead man's younger brother returns from a trading trip to Guangzhou. He learns that his widow has remarried — to the merchant's own business partner. He learns that the warehouse inventory he co-owned has been sold. He files suit.

The magistrate orders an exhumation. The coroner — a wuzuò (仵作, a forensic examiner trained in the methods of The Washing Away of Wrongs) — opens the grave.

After six months underground in southern China's damp climate, the body has largely decomposed. What remains: scattered bones, fragments of cloth, the dark stain of decomposition in the soil beneath.

The coroner lays out the bones on a clean cloth. He follows the procedure from Volume III (验骨, Verifying Bones): first clean each bone with water, then examine under direct sunlight. If the bones are stained dark grey-black throughout — not just on the surface, but into the bone matrix itself — this is consistent with poisoning before death.[4]Volume III (验骨) prescribes cleaning bones with water and examining under direct sunlight. He then performs the silver rod test, adapted for exhumed remains. A silver hairpin, cleaned with soap-pod water (皂角水), is inserted into the mouth cavity. The opening is sealed with paper and left for a period. When withdrawn: if the silver has turned blue-black and the discoloration cannot be washed off with soap-pod water — the poison is confirmed. The bones are dark. The silver turns black. The coroner writes his report.

The magistrate issues an arrest warrant.


How It Holds Up Today

Here is where Song Ci's method gets genuinely interesting — because modern science has something to say about it.

What he got right: Arsenic (砷) does indeed accumulate in bone tissue. When a person is exposed to arsenic — whether through acute poisoning or chronic environmental exposure — the arsenic replaces phosphorus in the hydroxyapatite crystal structure of bone. It stays there for decades, outlasting soft tissue by centuries. Modern forensic archaeologists routinely use this fact: in 2022, researchers at the Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History used X-ray fluorescence (XRF) spectroscopy to map arsenic concentrations in 19th-century bones, detecting levels as low as 10 parts per million.[6]See, e.g., Peschka et al., "XRF Analysis of Arsenic in Historical Bone Samples," Journal of Archaeological Science: Reports, 2022. The principle is identical to Song Ci's: poisoned bones are chemically different from normal bones. The difference is that where Song Ci relied on visual inspection (color change to dark grey-black), modern science uses spectral analysis.

What he got wrong — or rather, what was later corrected: In 1933, the pioneering forensic scientist Lín Jǐ (林几, 1897–1951) at China's first modern forensic research institute ran controlled experiments on the silver rod test described in The Washing Away of Wrongs. His findings were devastating to the traditional method. He demonstrated that decomposition itself produces hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) in the gastrointestinal tract, and hydrogen sulfide reacts with silver to form silver sulfide (Ag₂S) — which is black. So if the silver rod test was unreliable, what about Song Ci's more sophisticated claim — that the bones themselves turn dark when poisoned?

This claim actually holds up better. Arsenic poisoning does cause skeletal discoloration in chronic cases, though the mechanism is subtler than Song Ci described. Acute arsenic poisoning (the kind that kills in days) may not leave visible marks on bone — the concentration is too low and the exposure too brief. But chronic arsenic exposure (weeks or months of low-dose poisoning) does produce measurable changes in bone density and color, detectable through XRF even centuries later.[9]Modern studies confirm that chronic arsenic exposure (>6 months) produces measurable skeletal changes including increased bone density (osteosclerosis) and discoloration. The real genius of Song Ci's method was not the silver rod — it was the comparative logic. He didn't just say "dark bones = poison." He said: "Compare the bones of a poisoned-alive body with the bones of a body where poison was placed post-mortem. The first turns dark; the second stays yellowish-white." Translator's Notebook

When I first read the passage about bones turning black, I thought Song Ci was describing something metaphorical — the idea that bones "remember" what happened to the body. It took me a second reading to realize he was being literal. He actually watched poisoned corpses decompose and noted the bone color.

That's when it hit me: this man had access to a steady supply of dead bodies — confirmed poisonings, natural deaths, and (for the control group) corpses where poison had been faked. He was running what we would now call a longitudinal study. The only difference is that his "lab" was a burial ground and his "spectrometer" was his own eyes.

What I find genuinely moving is the specificity of the control group. Song Ci could have simply said "look for dark bones." Instead, he tells you what normal, non-poisoned bones should look like — yellowish-white — so you have a baseline. That instinct to compare, to establish what "normal" looks like before declaring something abnormal, is the foundational move of all forensic science. It's also the move that Lín Jǐ would use 700 years later to prove the silver rod wrong.

The method killed itself, in a way. Song Ci's insistence on comparison gave later scientists the tool to test his own tools. That's not a failure. That's the scientific method working exactly as intended.

🏛️ Historical Context: Song Ci's Poison Detection Methods

Song Ci (宋慈, 1186–1249) served as a judicial commissioner (提刑官) in the Southern Song dynasty. The Washing Away of Wrongs (洗冤集录, 1247) was compiled from earlier forensic manuals, government regulations, and Song Ci's own decades of courtroom experience.

The poisoning detection methods described here drew on a long tradition. The silver rod test may have originated even earlier — some scholars trace it to the Tang dynasty (618–907). Song Ci's innovation was not the tool itself but the procedural rigor: specifying how to clean the rod (soap-pod water), how to seal the opening (paper), how long to wait, and crucially, how to distinguish true poisoning from decomposition artifacts.

The "rice test" — using glutinous rice mixed with egg white, placed near the mouth and covered with vinegar-soaked cotton — represents an entirely different detection logic. If the rice turned black and foul-smelling, poison was confirmed. Modern analysis suggests this worked through a combination of chemical reaction (arsenic compounds reacting with sulfur-containing amino acids in egg protein) and bacterial decomposition accelerated by the warm, sealed environment.

The manual was officially approved by the Dàlǐ Sì (大理寺, the supreme judicial court) and remained in use — with amendments — through the Qing dynasty (1644–1912), a span of over 650 years.
