Privacy Policy

Cathay Tales ("we", "us", "the site") is an independent editorial project published at cathaytales.com. We respect your privacy and we collect as little data as we can while still keeping the lights on. This page explains what we do collect, why, and how to control it.

1. What we collect

1.1 Analytics (Google Analytics 4)

Every page on this site loads Google Analytics 4 (measurement ID G-S60FWRGXNY) so we can see, in aggregate, how many people visit, which tales are read, which countries readers come from, and how they found the site (search engine, direct, social link).

Google Analytics may store cookies in your browser and may collect: your IP address (anonymized by Google before storage), browser type and version, screen size, operating system, referring page, pages viewed, and time on page. We do not see your name, email, or any personally identifying information through Analytics.

Google's own data practices are governed by the Google Privacy Policy. You can opt out of Google Analytics across all sites by installing the official browser add-on.

1.2 Email subscriptions (Beehiiv)

If you subscribe to our email list, your email address is stored by our newsletter provider, Beehiiv, at cathaytales.beehiiv.com. Beehiiv also records subscription date, open/click metrics for the emails we send you, and any preferences you set in their subscriber dashboard.

Beehiiv processes this data under the Beehiiv Privacy Policy. You can unsubscribe at any time using the link at the bottom of every email we send, or by emailing us at the address in the Contact section.

1.3 Voluntary support (Ko-fi)

If you choose to support us by tipping on Ko-fi, your name, message, and any details you provide are handled by Ko-fi under their privacy policy. We see the public name or alias you choose to display, the tip amount, and any public message — nothing more. We never see your card details or full address.

1.4 Server logs and hosting (Cloudflare Pages)

This site is hosted on Cloudflare Pages. Cloudflare receives standard web-server requests (IP address, user agent, requested URL, timestamp) and may use this data to provide DDoS protection, caching, and basic security analytics. See the Cloudflare Privacy Policy for details.

1.5 Advertising (Google AdSense — if and when enabled)

We may, in the future, display advertising on this site through Google AdSense (publisher ID pub-7452174054733876) to help fund translations. When AdSense is active, Google and its advertising partners may use cookies and similar technologies to serve ads based on your prior visits to this site or other sites.

You can opt out of personalized advertising by visiting Google Ads Settings or aboutads.info. EU/UK/Swiss readers will be presented with a consent prompt before any non-essential ad cookies are set, as required by GDPR and the ePrivacy Directive.

2. Cookies

We use cookies and similar storage technologies only for the purposes described above (analytics, newsletter form, hosting security, and — if enabled — advertising). We do not use cookies for cross-site tracking outside the services listed.

You can clear or block cookies in your browser settings at any time. Doing so will not break the site, but Analytics and the embedded subscribe form may stop working correctly.

3. How we use your data

We use the data described above only to:

Depending on where you live, you may have the right to access, correct, export, or delete personal data we hold about you. To exercise any of these rights, contact us at the email in the Contact section. We will respond within 30 days.

EU/UK readers also have the right to lodge a complaint with their local data protection authority.

5. Children

Cathay Tales is intended for general audiences. Some tales deal with ghosts, violence, supernatural horror, and adult themes; we do not knowingly market to or collect data from children under 13 (or 16 in the EU). If you believe a child has subscribed, please contact us and we will remove the record.

6. Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time. The "Last updated" date at the top will always reflect the most recent change. Material changes will be announced in the newsletter.
